I really enjoyed making a list of movies for the weekend last Friday, so I figured I'd do it again! This week, I've picked a few movies that will make you think. I will warn you that pretty much all of these films are not kid friendly, so if you have any little ones, wait until their asleep!

The first movie is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which features Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as a former couple trying to erase one another from their memory. Their chemistry in this film is unbelievable and I love seeing Jim Carrey in more serious roles. This movie makes you wonder if it's ever really worth just forgetting someone and moving on...

American Beauty stars Kevin Spacey and Annette Benning as a Suburban couple who seem perfect on the outside, but live a much darker family life than meets the eye. Spacey's character is going through a mid-life crisis, while his wife and daughter are going through changes of their own. It's emotional, comical, dramatic, and deep. Definitely worth a watch...

Donnie Darko is one of my top five favorite movies of all time! It stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a teenager trying to find the meaning behind visions he's been having of Frank, the creepy looking rabbit, after he survives a freak accident. It's a very complex movie with a lot going on, so you definitely have to pay attention. Other actors in this film include Drew Barrymore (who's production company, Flower Films, produced it), Noah Wyle, Jenna Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Patrick Swayze-who nails his role as a eccentric motivational speaker! This movie is a cult favorite that I had to watch twice to get as much of the full picture as I could...

Memento is about a man with short term memory loss who tries to find the person who murdered his wife. Because he doesn't have the ability to create new memories, he relies on a polaroid's to help him in solving the mystery. The movie has two different sequences: one in black and white, the other in color. The color scenes run backward, or in reverse chronological order, while the black and white scenes run in chronological order. The scenes alternate throughout the film until they meet in the middle, which definitely keeps you on your toes...
And lastly, because Groundhog Day is tomorrow and will probably be on TV anyways, Groundhog Day! Bill Murray is a Pittsburgh weather man who hates having to do the live report in Punxsutawney, PA on Groundhog Day. He ends up having to relive February 2nd everyday until he reexamines his life and gets things right. Its a funny movie that makes you think about what you would do differently if you could relive a day. It really puts your priorities in check!
Have a thought-provoking weekend :)

ReplyDeleteThe Donnie Darko bunny is one of my fears.
ReplyDeleteI adore American Beauty.
GREAT movies! I love love LOVE Eternal Sunshine but I did have to watch it two times to really understand it. I love the message and I think anyone who has been through a break-up can totally relate.
ReplyDeleteAnd one of my favorite quotes of all time is the last quote from American Beauty when Spacey's character is narrating how he feels about life after being shot: "... but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst... And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude..."
I love Eternal Sunshine and Memento. I've always heard great things about Donnie Darko, but I've never seen it.
